A Message From HSMAI’s Leaders

We are an industry of hope, resilience, and determination. 2022 encapsulated all those characteristics and was a story of recovery. The rebound exceeded all our expectations. It is with this spirit of renewal and optimism that we present the 2022 HSMAI Annual Report.

In 2022, HSMAI’s goals were to curate insights, education, and resources to provide value for our member companies and individuals. All of this would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the HSMAI staff, volunteers, and partners. We want to thank them for their tireless efforts in making HSMAI the premier association for the hospitality sales, marketing, and revenue optimization industry.

This past year, we were thrilled to welcome the Adrian’s and Curate back to in-person events. In February, in Boca Raton, we held the Adrian’s away from NYC for the first time and celebrated the best in recovery marketing and PR. Commercial Strategy Week in Orlando was a huge success, and Sales Leader Forum in Frisco was another great event. Curate, our exclusive event for organizational partners, examined a trend the pandemic accelerated – the move towards commercial excellence. We're already looking forward to this year's editions for all our events.

In addition to these events, we've also made great strides in our education and connection offerings. Our Advisory Boards, Rising Leader Councils, and chapters have all been extremely active, and we're seeing more and more engagement from our members and partners.

As we look forward, we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. We are committed to providing you with the insights, education, and networking opportunities you need to navigate the challenges and capitalize on the opportunities of the future.

We are proud to share with you the 2022 HSMAI Annual Report. As we close the book on 2022, an eventful and exciting year, we are reminded of how much the hospitality industry has to offer. Thank you for your continued support of HSMAI. I encourage you to take some time to review the annual report and learn more about the great things we’ve accomplished together.

Membership Matters

HSMAI Americas Chapters continued to think differently when it came to education programs, communicating with their local markets and seeking new ways to engage.  Most chapters went back to in person programs throughout the year, several chapters held workshop style programs vs. the one hour in and out events of the past. HSMAI Chapter Boards were STRONG in 2022 – sharing the load of responsibilities and dialed in on what the LOCAL market needed for education.

For the first time since the pandemic hit, HSMAI chartered a new chapter…HSMAI Puerto Rico! In partnership with Discover Puerto Rico, HSMAI Puerto Rico chartered in September with over 65 people in attendance and followed up in November with a CHDM study course, with most people taking the exam onsite. Puerto Rico now has 25 new CHDM’s in the market!

Chapters did a fantastic job of seeking out new speakers & topics to their markets to continue engagement and high-quality education for their members, here are a few highlights:

  • Greater New York: Held the 2022 Intercollegiate Global Conference, working with several schools and supported by the HSMAI Foundation! Sessions held over the course of a week.

  • Minnesota: Held monthly “zoom” 30-minute check in’s with members, with updates & a time to connect between education events.

  • South Florida: Developed and launched a new “Day in the Life” program for hospitality students to visit a local property for a day, learn about the different departments and take a deeper dive into the world of hotels!

  • Brasil continues to set the bar when it comes to education! Hosting their own ROC Conference, TMMs (Travel & M.I.C.E. Managers) Summit, HHTT HSMAI Hospitality Travel Tools, Strategy Conference and HSMAI Awards and Several Roundtables.

  • Arizona created a “year in review” video celebrating the chapters many success over 2022!

  • Las Vegas had great success in shifting their signature ROC program to a COMMERICAL program including Sales, Marketing & Revenue ½ conference.

  • Washington DC: Hosted their first ever “Director Roundtables” with great success, which will now be a signature program for the chapter

HSMAI’s Organizational Memberships continued strong support for the association and for membership within their companies, with 74 members participating in 2022. The highlight of the year was the return of the in-person CURATE event for Organizational Member Companies, with more than 75 representatives getting together in Frisco Texas for an event focusing on Commercial Strategies.

Commercial Strategy Events

2022 was a year of moving from recovery to acceleration – in the industry and at HSMAI events. HSMAI held three Commercial Strategy Events: ROC Americas, the Marketing Strategy Conference and Sales Leader Forum. The year also brought the return of an in-person CURATE event for HSMAI’s Organizational Company representatives. More than 800 industry professionals attended these HSMAI events.

Commercial Strategy Week events helped the industry ACCELERATE RECOVERY, and anticipate and respond to headwinds, identify new opportunities, better align attendees sales, marketing, and revenue optimization efforts, adapt to the ever-changing landscape, and drive profit throughout the customer journey.

HSMAI also brought together senior executives at the 2022 series of Executive Roundtables. Sessions were held for Revenue, Sales, Marketing, Distribution, and Hotel Management Company executives in conjunction with HSMAI Commercial Strategy Events, providing a unique opportunity for executive-level peer groups to have meaningful dialogue in a confidential environment.

Professional Development

In 2022 HSMAI continued to offer three professional certifications, the Certified Revenue Management Executive (CRME), the Certified Hospitality Digital Marketer (CHDM), and the Certified in Hospitality Business Acumen (CHBA).  Nearly 450 people applied for the CRME in 2022, over 200 applied for the CHDM, and 60 people went through the CHBA online, self-paced training.   In addition, there were three live classes taught for the CHBA certification.

There are over 2,700 CRMEs from 71 countries, and we expect to reach the 3,000 threshold in 2023.  And on the 10th anniversary of the launch of the CHDM in September 2022, we bestowed the 1,000th CHDM certification, earned by Olivia Garcell from Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

HSMAI’s Essentials classes enjoyed enormous success in 2022, with nearly 100 people each taking the Hotel Revenue Optimization Essentials (HROE) and the Hotel Revenue Digital Marketing Essentials (HDME) online, live-instruction courses.  We also offered the Hotel Digital Sales Essentials (HDSE) class, and in 2023 expect to launch the online Hotel Data Analytics Essentials (HDAE).  We also began development of the HDME+, an online, self-paced version of the HDME instructor-led course, and it launched in February 2023.

Work was also begun on the creation of the CHSL, the new Certified Hotel Sales Leader certification we expect to offer in late 2023.  The new CRME study guide, Evolving Dynamics: From Revenue Management to Revenue Strategy, was also begun in 2022, and will be published in the second quarter of 2023.

HSMAI’s student revenue certification, the Certified Revenue Management Analyst (CRMA), was paused at the end of 2022 and will relaunch with a new process and an up-to-date, comprehensive study guide in the first quarter of 2023.

Numerous major hotel management companies and hospitality partners affirmed the value of HSMAI’s certifications in revenue management or digital marketing by making one of our certifications a requirement for their employees in that discipline.

Advisory Boards

Complementing the work of HSMAI’s chapters, HSMAI’s advisory boards connect members with common interests across geographic boundaries in the Americas region. Each advisory board guides HSMAI’s strategic direction as it relates to their dedicated subject matter, resulting in face-to-face and virtual education, special resources, insights, and more that are specific to their particular area of expertise.

FUELING SALES

The Sales Advisory Board is demonstrating the value and relevance of the sales function by focusing on its four key priorities, and advocates that all sales leaders make these priorities their own:

  1. Reduce industry wide cost of sales/customer acquisition to improve profitability, and fight commoditization of hospitality services in the purchaser’s mind so that hoteliers are not just selling on price.

  2. Promote innovative recruiting and talent development practices, including career-pathing and leadership development for hospitality salespeople.

  3. Enhance sales force business acumen in order to increase productivity and improve the buying-selling process; improve sales forecasting and pipeline management methodologies; and, encourage the use of technologies that assist these efforts.

  4. Develop efficient sales practices for hotels, including aligning sales with operations, revenue management, and ecommerce, while reducing costs. This includes implementing effective performance measures (e.g., conversion, speed, filling need periods, profitability, etc.) and simplified reward systems that keep salespeople focused on the goals of the overall enterprise.
